from a rural or farming background and are quite often stock owners . Keep and management of stock is a Landcare issue . From
here it is only a short step to stock theft .
· Theft , burglary and stock theft are major and also growing issues
in the bush and of great concern to affected people . Theft can cause great economic loss and this affects the ability of
land and stock owners to spend time and money on other Landcare issues .
· Landcare is not only about planting trees
and fighting weeds , it is also a means of bringing neighbours and the community back together . It is a social event and
aims to restore the rural tradition of neighbourhood watch . Sadly this tradition is getting lost more and more . This opens
up easy ways for thieves . With healthy neighbourhood relations a lot of theft could not occur at all .
· The attitude
of police and courts towards stock theft leaves a lot to be desired and needs drastic changes and improvements .
